For nearly a decade, a novelist wrote gripping, scandalous, and often disturbing fiction using her life as a canvas and herself as the protagonist in a massive web of lies. In this revealing memoir by author Amy D. Brooks, the complex untruths told by the young woman to disguise a tragic mental state declining into drug addiction and alcoholism are deconstructed in shocking honesty. The confessions of a pathological liar who married a stranger, held jobs qualified for with phantom degrees, and found her way into national news and courtrooms alike as the result of her fictional personae are transcribed in this tale of the author's eccentric journey to sobriety, truth, and spiritual salvation.

I call total bull on what I've read so far. Here we have a self-labeled sociopath, pretending to be someone she isn't for years, even scamming a husband and employers (how she got this far with fake ID is beyond me -- and I don't believe she did). On top of that she is a raging alcoholic and drug abuser, who pukes on herself, passes out in Starbucks, and gets fired from her mall job for hangovers, engages in fraud with customer credit cards (and never got caught??) -- and yet to pull off her fakery, she says she "taught myself to speak Germany in order to read World War II documents" and "mastered a Russian language dictionary, spending most of my time polishing my skills in conversational theatres." And maintained weekly attendance at a reform temple to pretend she was Jewish -- and Hebrew immersion classes -- and to top it off, she finished a novel. Seriously? All that and working in a mall? While drunk and drug addled? And she can't stay sober enough to hold a fake job, she can't stay conscious in a coffeeshop, and yet she can teach herself foreign languages? I feel cheated for having paid for this book. I would label her less as sociopath than as con artist, and the con continues as people buy this book.Product details

My Name Is Amelia and I'm a Sociopath (Audible Audio Edition) Amy D Brooks Andrea Tuszynski Amelia Noel Presents LLC Books Reviews
I was upset with the purchase because I've come to find out in the second edition that she was NOT a sociopath . I found this out after I purchased the book.
This is poorly written (author uses "mine" instead of "my" on nearly every page, liberal use of meaningless italicized font, obviously under-educated approach to building the story, etc) and as others have mentioned it becomes redundant. About 1/2 way through I started just skimming. The lack of organization, the skipping back and forth across the years, the continual confusion and probable lies of the author, and the lack of real insight make me wish I would not have spent the $3. The author comes across as inauthentic and it's quite hard to believe at the end that she made her way out of this mess with relatively few consequences (particularly legal consequences) or that her husband with put up with her coming and going as she claims she did. She's not a sociopath, but at one point she mentions borderline personality disorder and I thought "bingo". [...]
A thoroughly depressing account of the life of Amy D. Brooks. Brutal, relentless depressing. It's well written but the subject matter is both confronting and sad. Honest, - as much as an autobiography by a sociopath can be I suppose - observational but not enlightening....
As a therapist I loved the read. As a person looking for entertainment, I loved the read. I only believe 1/2 of it, and probably half of that isn't true, but still worth the read!!
I was intrigued to read a memoir by a sociopath. Instead, this book is a memoir of an addict. In that respect, it's not really a unique addition to the addiction memoir. Mary Karr's Lit is interesting as is Pete Hamill's A Drinking Life.
Interesting story but editing obviously done by a novice.
Writing is MUCH better if you only use the word ‘that’ very rarely. It’s an unnecessary word most of the time.
This author used it 2 and 3 times in a sentence, I could barely tolerate it.
I've gotten 1/2 way through this book and have completely lost interest. My brother is a sociopath -- a bonafide pathological liar, cheat and thief. So having grown up with somebody who is the REAL DEAL, I've come to learn a lot about this personality disorder. And the number one thing that all sociopaths/psychopaths/anti-social personalities have in common is a COMPLETE lack of a conscience. They do not possess genuine feelings for others (they fabricate feelings) and they have no guilt or remorse for any of their actions. The author of this book expresses feelings of guilt and remorse for many of her actions, and states that she abused drugs and alcohol as a way to numb her feelings of self hatred. Wrong. True sociopaths, again, have no genuine feelings. They only have a primitive instinct to survive, and they will use and abuse anyone who gets close enough to them to get what they want. Through the books I've read and the multiple mental health care professionals I've consulted, I've learned that a true sociopath doesn't realize that there is anything wrong with him/her. Therefore, this book, from the title itself, "My Name is Amelia, and I'm a Sociopath", is a fraudulent portrayal from the get-go.
