This book has meanings, origins, and pronunciation for over 1700 names, plus interesting name lists and guides for picking a name. The book is well researched and has few formatting errors (probably caused by the ebook format). The list of banned names makes me wish those people had used this book before picking a name. The only thing that could improve this book is to have even more names. Yes, I want it all. )
There are a couple of small positives here. First, there's lists of forbidden names from various countries that do that sort of thing. I'm a writer and I look at these kinds of books to name characters, so this is a fun thing to know. Also, there's a list of the sources she's used at the back of the book.
I'm all for sources and research but the thing you have to do with the stuff you discover is to assimilate them before you regurgitate them on the page. And that doesn't seem to have happened.
The bulk of the book is alphabetical and contains boy and girl names with some attempt at meanings and origins. The way the definitions are done, where they are given for some form but listed as unknown for another, is part of why I say this is just a cobbled together bunch of names harvested whole from the different books she used as sources.
It's even more obvious when it comes to how to pronounce the names. If you're going to do this, do it right and have a list of phonetic spellings that are uniform across the board. This was the most ridiculously varied part along with the way she broke the syllables and the accents out, and sometimes didn't.
Then there was the formatting. The names weren't evenly spaced, with at least one every other 'page' (kindle fire 6") that skipped the line between. The list changed from one letter to the next wherever it fell on the page. And the lists of popular names at the front of the book were listed in tables that broke wherever the page ended rather than any attempt being made to keep them together on a page. Nor did it help when the tenth names on some lists spaced themselves so that the first name pushed the second out of its place so that Charlotte appeared under the boys' column and William appeared a line lower down in her place.
I borrowed this thru KU and I'm not going to keep it.
